How to Make $1000 a Day

admin

A Friend asked me the other day what I would do if I had been challenged to make $1000/day.  I think he was half expecting a short answer.  And I tried to figure out how to put it into 140 characters or less.  Not that it was on twitter, just that 140 is a nice round number.

Well I couldn’t. So I am attempting to do it in a blog post.  Here goes.

Step 1 – Find something that’s worth $1000/day. I have chosen a business.  Mine is a plan for a scalable online SaaS (software as a service) that will be sold not by me, but by resellers looking to offer something solid on a very flexible pricing model.  I have run the numbers over and over on this one and I see it being quite a bit larger than $1000/day.  I started with about 25 business ideas that could have easily sucked up as much time and effort as this one.  Only 1 or 2 of them even approach this one in terms of monetary potential.

Step2 – Learn as much as possible about managing a business that can pay me $1000/day.  I have resorted to blogs, LinkedIn, and Twitter.  I have found some of the more expert people in various aspects of what I need to do.  I read A LOT from these guys.  And I’ve learned a lot about how I want this business to run and how to market it.

Step3 – Don’t go alone.  I started this out with 2 partners.  We have kept each other on track when it was most tempting to give up or take the short way out. I  think attacking something like this alone is a stupid idea. Don’t do it.

Step 3 – Create a solid plan. I have spent the last year and a half building this thing.  We started out with 2 solid months of planning. Sometimes for several full days each week. (one of the advantages of being unemployed at the time) We analyzed the competition and anything out there that remotely touched our sphere.  I might also add that I have been working in this technology for that last decade.  Part of being able to create a solid plan is to follow one of Warren Buffett’s rules “stick to what you know”.

Step 4 – Be flexible. We have stuck to our plan but not been so blind as to not recognize when we had something wrong and needed to go back to the drawing board, or white board in our case.  We have made major shifts to the project.  But (and this is the most heartening part) our overall strategy has not changed. The marketing and industry we are targeting is evolving into what we need it to be.  Had we launched a year ago, we would probably have not been well accepted because the market wasn’t ready for it.  Now I’d say it has almost been perfectly primed.

Step 5 – Don’t give up. We’re still not done but we’re approaching the completion of version 1.  We have thought we were close before.  We even thought we were done at one point.  Thinking this would have been done toward the end of 2008 and still not having it done by mid 2010 could really suck the spirit out of a lot of people.  I think having the right partners has made us be able to keep going.  Did I mention the importance of having partners?

So I guess there isn’t much else I can really say without showing everyone what this project is.  Well, I’m not ready to show it off.  And I’m not really sure when it will be.  Don’t worry, once it’s ready, that’s all you will be hearing about.  Just stay tuned.

And keep in mind that this isn’t what I would tell everyone else to do, this is just what I have chosen to do.  For some people I would say the best way for them to make $1000 per day is to go to law school and work their way up in a law firm and get to where they can charge $250/hour and work 4 hour days.  That’s just not me.

Good luck.

Social Media Brings Internet Marketing to Brick and Mortar via Foursquare

admin

The first time I saw a Foursquare update on Twitter, I figured that someone must have taken a funny photo of the group that had gone out to some venue and posted it to twitpic.  I was a little disappointed but shrugged it off.  Then I started seeing them everywhere.  It got really annoying.

Then I decided that I really hated Foursquare.  Just like the way I used to hate Twitter.  I didn’t understand it and hadn’t taken the time to even try.  This time however, I recognized that that’s why I didn’t like it.  So I decided to go try to figure it out.

I remembered how annoying all those tweets had been so I made sure I wasn’t updating Twitter with Foursquare check-ins.  And you know what happened?  I forgot to exclude Facebook.  And I started hearing from people who Continue reading

iPhone App Review – Epicurious by Conde Nast Digital

admin

A good friend of mine insisted that I need this app.  I like to cook.  Some times I even fancy myself a gourmet of sorts.  Like last night.

I had downloaded Epicurious a few days ago and had some time to play with it.  Mostly searching for ideas on what to cook and ways to cook things on my new BBQ.  Last night I decided to go strictly Epicurious.  Seered Ahi Tuna with Grilled Asparagus and Campfire Potatoes.  All cookable on my new grill and all on my favorites list in the app.

First, I searched, found, and added several good recipes to my favorites list.  Not too hard.

Second, I browser through the shopping list to make sure I have all the required ingredients or a close substitute.

Last, get cooking, flipping back and forth through the recipes while cooking.  Have I mentioned that I really need an iPad?  Very few things Continue reading

iPhone App Review – GoalMan by Jason Barker

admin

Recently I started working on my life goals.  And I just happened to find a nice little goal tracking app on the iPhone.  Turns out it’s by someone I know.  So this review may be a little biased.  So what.

First, setting up goals.  Easy. you set the type of progress that you’ll be tracking.  Single event, percentage, of custom range.  So far I haven’t found any of my goals that don’t fit into one of those types.  Then you set the frequency and some start/end dates. Last you assign it to one of your goal groups.  I’ll add this to my spiritual group…

After you save your goal, you can Continue reading

Digital Amputation – How Addicted are You to Your iPhone?

admin

So I do a little freelancing on the side.  And I just moved into a new office with a friend who also does the same thing.  Just finished getting settled yesterday.  I have to say, I’m really happy with the office. It’s 10 minutes closer to home, it’s quieter, it’s more professional, AND it’s cheaper.

So yesterday as we’re winding down and getting ready to head home I loaded up my arms with all the stuff that needed to not stay in the office. And somehow I managed to remove the headphones from my iPhone and put them in my bag but without realizing it, I put my iPhone back down on my desk rather than in my pocket. Probably because my other hand was full of boxes or wires or something.

Then we locked up the office and headed out.  I had driven about 100 yards when I realized that I didn’t have my phone.  I also realized that I didn’t have my set of keys to the office yet as we haven’t gone to make copies.  So instinctively I reach for my iPhone to call Adam and tell him to go back and open the office for me. “Doh! I can’t call him!” So I pulled over and tried to spot him in traffic.  No luck.

Next I proceeded to hyperventilate and break out into hives.  That would mean a whole 24 hours (almost) without being able to make or take calls.  So I headed home. I felt like I was in one of those movies where everything happens in slow motion after the main character experiences something really traumatic.  Usually like death or war.  But I kept telling myself, “It’ll be ok. It’ll just be like I chose to not pick up the phone.”  So I am most of the way home and I realize that it’s looking like it might rain or snow.  So I reach for the iPhone to check the weather. “Aurgh!”

So I get home and I wanted to check how much money I had in my checking account before I got ready for bed. “Daaaugh!”

So I drifted off to sleep, half weeping because I hadn’t been able to catch a Top Gear episode on my iPhone…

Then I woke up. Late. “Where was my iPhone to wake me up?!?! Oh yeah, forgot.”

Managed to get ready for work without any major trauma and get half way out the door.  I needed the weather forecast again.. “Grrrr”, I was getting angry at this point.

Then I pull into work and am thinking as I walk past the cafe, I should stop and get a breakfast wrap and check in to foursquare to make sure I’m still the mayor. “AAAAAGH!!! I can’t take it any longer”

Now it’s almost 4:00 PM. I am counting the minutes. Not until I can go home for the weekend. I’m counting the minutes until I can pick up my iPhone and just feel the sleek aluminum case (yes, I still have a 1st gen). I’m going to lock myself in a room and just sit there and go through the apps I have missed for the last day.  It’ll be like running on a newly and magically re-attached foot or something.

Ah Facebook, How do I Hate Thee? Let Me Count the Ways.

admin

So I just read a good post about why Twitter is so much better than Facebook.  And I don’t really want to offend all my FB friends but I’m going to risk it because I hate it so bad. Friends don’t get me wrong, it’s not you I hate, it’s Facebook.  Please just go get setup on Twitter.

When Facebook started getting popular, I knew I needed to get on it and understand the user experience because it is such a huge part of Internet marketing.  So I did, and it was just like MySpace without those horrible page styles.  I hated it from Continue reading
