Social Media Brings Internet Marketing to Brick and Mortar via Foursquare

admin

The first time I saw a Foursquare update on Twitter, I figured that someone must have taken a funny photo of the group that had gone out to some venue and posted it to twitpic.  I was a little disappointed but shrugged it off.  Then I started seeing them everywhere.  It got really annoying.

Then I decided that I really hated Foursquare.  Just like the way I used to hate Twitter.  I didn’t understand it and hadn’t taken the time to even try.  This time however, I recognized that that’s why I didn’t like it.  So I decided to go try to figure it out.

I remembered how annoying all those tweets had been so I made sure I wasn’t updating Twitter with Foursquare check-ins.  And you know what happened?  I forgot to exclude Facebook.  And I started hearing from people who Continue reading

iPhone App Review – Epicurious by Conde Nast Digital

admin

A good friend of mine insisted that I need this app.  I like to cook.  Some times I even fancy myself a gourmet of sorts.  Like last night.

I had downloaded Epicurious a few days ago and had some time to play with it.  Mostly searching for ideas on what to cook and ways to cook things on my new BBQ.  Last night I decided to go strictly Epicurious.  Seered Ahi Tuna with Grilled Asparagus and Campfire Potatoes.  All cookable on my new grill and all on my favorites list in the app.

First, I searched, found, and added several good recipes to my favorites list.  Not too hard.

Second, I browser through the shopping list to make sure I have all the required ingredients or a close substitute.

Last, get cooking, flipping back and forth through the recipes while cooking.  Have I mentioned that I really need an iPad?  Very few things Continue reading

Old Technologies

admin

I predict that by 2020 we won’t have printed phone books. Or newspapers for that matter but this post isn’t about newspapers. It’s about phone books.

We had a new phone book delivered to the house yesterday.  My 10-year-old son who loves books and has read over 1000 pages in a single weekend picked it up and gaped at it huge size. “What’s this? he asked with eyes big as saucers. I know he has seen them before.  I think so anyway. Pretty sure…

Then I started thinking about it, when is the last time I picked up a phone book with the intention of finding a phone number?  I honestly can’t remember but I’m sure it was years ago.  And then I got to thinking about how digital technology is killing many aspects of the print industry.  Newspaper, magazines, and phone books… the list goes on. Phone book companies for the most part have done a good job transitioning to the digital age.  I can’t wait until you only see phone books in museums and movies.

Having once managed the Internet department for Phone Directories Company, I know a little Continue reading

Free Market and the Airlines

admin

So the government is toying with the idea of regulating airline prices.  Just because one airline wants to start charging extra for your carry-on luggage.  Now a Senator from NY thinks he can figure out the fair market price that airlines should charge for various fees.  How can he think he can possibly have a clue what the real cost of goods are?

How have we arrived at a place where anyone in the government feels it is their place to decide how a company makes ends meet?

When the government backs away completely from a market where there is healthy competition between companies, the consumers get a better price and a service level that fits with their expectations.  If an airline wants Continue reading

Jonathan had to do a report on a random county in Utah.  He chose Wasatch county because it’s close and there’s lots of good things to shoot video of.

iPhone App Review – GoalMan by Jason Barker

admin

Recently I started working on my life goals.  And I just happened to find a nice little goal tracking app on the iPhone.  Turns out it’s by someone I know.  So this review may be a little biased.  So what.

First, setting up goals.  Easy. you set the type of progress that you’ll be tracking.  Single event, percentage, of custom range.  So far I haven’t found any of my goals that don’t fit into one of those types.  Then you set the frequency and some start/end dates. Last you assign it to one of your goal groups.  I’ll add this to my spiritual group…

After you save your goal, you can Continue reading
